'CONISTON' was the first of her class. She was laid down in 1951, Launched on 9th July 1952, and completed in 1953. She was originally named 'HMS RED ANT' but the name was later changed during construction, when the Navy decided that all the NEW class of ships should be named after villages in Britain ending in --TON'. Thus the 'CONISTON CLASS' were born. When 'CONISTON' was built, she had no top to her funnel, a lattice mast and an open bridge. After 17 years of service she was broken up in 1970.
